Christine Fréchette Runs for CAQ Leadership: Quebec's Next Premier? (2026)

Quebec's Political Landscape is Shaking Up! The race to lead the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) and potentially become the province's next premier is officially underway, and a prominent figure has just thrown her hat into the ring.

Christine Fréchette, the current Minister of Economy, Innovation, and Energy, is making history as the first confirmed candidate vying for the top spot. This exciting development comes after Premier François Legault announced his resignation earlier this month, after more than seven years at the helm. While Legault plans to stay on until his successor is chosen, the search for a new leader is on!

Fréchette, who will be launching her campaign this Sunday in her hometown of Trois-Rivières, brings a wealth of experience to the table. First elected in 2022, she initially served as the immigration minister before taking on her current powerful portfolio in 2024. Interestingly, her political journey also includes a stint as chief of staff for Jean-François Lisée during the Parti Québécois government led by Pauline Marois.

But here's where it gets interesting... Fréchette isn't entering this race alone. She's already garnered significant support, with at least 11 MNAs, including fellow cabinet ministers Kateri Champagne Jourdain, Mathieu Lacombe, and Benoit Charette, backing her bid. This early endorsement signals a strong foundation for her campaign.

The official leadership race kicked off on Thursday, with the decisive vote scheduled for a leadership convention on April 12, 2026. The winner will step into the role of premier, leading the province until the next general election, which is anticipated for this fall.

While Fréchette is the first to officially declare, other ministers are reportedly considering a run. Environment Minister Bernard Drainville and Natural Resources Minister Jean-François Simard have both indicated they are exploring their options.

And this is the part most people miss... Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette has publicly stated he will not be running. Despite numerous encouragements, he cited family and professional reasons for stepping aside, emphasizing that it's not the right time for him. He also reaffirmed his commitment to working on the CAQ's proposed Quebec constitution, a document that has faced criticism from opposition parties as mere political maneuvering.

Adding to the list of those not pursuing the leadership, Granby MNA and former public security minister François Bonnardel also announced on social media that he would be withdrawing from contention.

For those ministers who are aiming for leadership, there are specific rules to follow. They must step down from their current cabinet positions to avoid any conflicts of interest during the campaign.

To even qualify for the ballot, candidates need to demonstrate substantial support within the party. This involves securing endorsements from 1,000 party members spread across at least 75 electoral districts. Furthermore, they need the backing of at least 15 MNAs and 100 members from the CAQ's youth commission. On top of these requirements, candidates must submit a non-refundable deposit of $30,000 and adhere to an election spending limit of $150,000.

What are your thoughts on Christine Fréchette stepping forward as the first candidate? Do you believe her experience makes her the strongest contender, or are you curious to see who else might emerge? Share your opinions in the comments below!
