Lakers Highlights: Jaxson Hayes' NBA Slam Dunk Contest Performance (2026)

Lakers' Jaxson Hayes Misses Out on NBA Slam Dunk Contest: A Dream Unfulfilled

The NBA All-Star Weekend, held at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, marked a special occasion for the Los Angeles Lakers players, despite the event technically being hosted by the L.A. Clippers. Among the Lakers' representatives, Luka Doncic and LeBron James made the All-Star team, and Jaxson Hayes was set to compete in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, a dream he had cherished since childhood.

Hayes has showcased his dunking prowess during his three seasons with the Lakers, and this was his first opportunity to perform on the contest's grandest stage. He faced off against Carter Bryant of the San Antonio Spurs, Jase Richardson of the Orlando Magic, and Keshad Johnson of the Miami Heat. The judges, including Brent Barry, Dwight Howard, Nate Robinson, and Dominique Wilkins, would decide his fate.

In the first round, Hayes went last and attempted a dunk while jumping from the free throw line, but he was a step ahead, resulting in a 44.6 score from the judges, placing him fourth. This score meant he would advance to the second round, where he kicked things off with a familiar through-the-legs dunk on a self-pass, earning a score of 47.2.

However, Hayes' journey ended before the final round. With a combined score of 91.8 in the first two rounds, he finished ahead of Jase Richardson (88.8) but behind Bryant (94.8) and Johnson (92.8).

Despite not making it to the top two, Hayes' performance was a testament to his passion for dunking. He had always dreamed of competing in the Slam Dunk Contest, and his enthusiasm was evident in his play. Before the contest, he expressed his excitement, saying, 'I’ve always dreamed of being in the Dunk Contest, it’s just something you do as a kid.'

While Hayes fell short of his dream, the contest showcased the talent and excitement of the NBA. And who knows, perhaps one day, he'll get another chance to fulfill his dream and make a lasting impression on the slam dunking world.
