Special elections for the Mississippi Supreme Court have been ordered following a significant voting rights violation. A judge ruled that the electoral map used to select justices is in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which is currently under scrutiny at the U.S. Supreme Court. This ruling comes after a 2022 lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which highlighted the map's detrimental impact on Mississippi's Delta region, a historically Black area. The current map divides this region in half, diminishing the influence of Black voters in the Central District. Mississippi, with nearly 40% of its population identifying as Black, has never had more than one Black justice on its nine-member Supreme Court. This lack of representation has been a long-standing issue, as only four Black individuals have ever served on the court, all of whom held the same seat in the Central District and were appointed by a sitting governor. The judge's decision mandates that the Mississippi Legislature redraw the electoral map by the end of its 2026 regular session. Once approved, the new map will pave the way for special elections in November 2026, ensuring a more equitable representation of the state's diverse population. This development marks a significant step towards addressing the historical underrepresentation of Black voters in Mississippi's highest court.
