Oakland Golden Grizzlies Dominate Day 1 of Horizon League Championships (2026)

The Golden Grizzlies are making waves at the Horizon League Championships!

A Dominant Start

The Oakland swimming and diving teams kicked off their championship journey in Indianapolis, and what a thrilling first day it was! With top-three finishes in every event, the Golden Grizzlies left their mark on the competition.

Medley Magic

In the 200 medley relay, the women's team, led by sophomore Grace Albrecht, showcased their talent. Despite a new lineup, they finished an impressive third, just a whisker away from the champions. On the men's side, seniors Christopher Palvadre, Micah Scheffer, and Charles Brown, along with freshman Ajjuub Ezzat, claimed a well-deserved second place.

But here's where it gets controversial... IU Indianapolis, who were projected fourth, surged to the top spot. What a surprise!

Diving Deep

The women's three-meter dive saw two Golden Grizzlies, senior Victoria Sanders and sophomore Elizabeth Woollcott, shine in the finals. Sanders secured an outstanding third place, consistently delivering top-four finishes at the Horizon League Championships. Woollcott wasn't far behind, finishing in fifth.

Relay Dominance

And this is the part most people miss... the Golden Grizzlies' relay teams stole the show! Both the men's and women's 800 free relay teams dominated, claiming victory. The women's team, consisting of seniors Erika Pietras and Mia Englender, and sophomores Kelley Hassett and Viviane Partridge, improved their time by an incredible four seconds to take the title.

But the men's relay team truly wrote history. Seniors Nicholas Karel Subagyo and Harry Nicholson, along with juniors Max Haney and Joseph Countryman, shattered the previous league and school record by nearly two seconds! Talk about a record-breaking performance!

Standing Tall

With podium finishes across the board on day one, the Golden Grizzlies are leading the pack. The men's team has accumulated 74 points, while the women's team boasts an impressive 103 points.

The Horizon League Championships continue on February 19, with more thrilling events and records waiting to be broken. Will the Golden Grizzlies maintain their dominance? Stay tuned and join the conversation!
