UK Economy Surprises with Stronger-than-Expected 0.3% Growth in November
The UK economy defied expectations, growing by 0.3% in November, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This figure surpasses the 0.1% growth predicted by economists surveyed by Reuters, marking a significant rebound from the unexpected 0.1% contraction in October. The ONS attributes this growth to the robust performance of the services and production sectors, which expanded by 0.3% and 1.1%, respectively, while construction experienced a 1.3% decline.
The recent data follows a challenging period for the UK economy, marked by a cyber-attack on Jaguar Land Rover, which disrupted car production, and heightened consumer and business uncertainty in the lead-up to the Autumn Budget. However, the positive economic indicators have brought relief, with Jane Foley, head of FX Strategy at Rabobank, highlighting the recovery in the manufacturing sector and its potential impact on the retail and consumption sectors.
Economists predict a brighter future for the UK economy, particularly with the Bank of England's anticipated interest rate cuts. Sanjay Raja, chief UK economist at Deutsche Bank, forecasts a strong GDP rebound in the first quarter of 2026, citing improving survey data and signs of labor market stabilization. He expects households to increase spending and investment to continue its upward trend, with UK GDP growth projected to be slightly lower than in 2025 but with quarterly growth tracking 0.35% quarter-on-quarter.
